Pumpkin Floral Arrangement

Those gorgeous pumpkin or gourd arrangements that are so popular during October and especially November, for Thanksgiving centerpieces, are easier to make yourself than you might think. We wanted to give ourselves the challenge of making one with a budget of $20. Well, we ended up a little bit over budget by just $3, but for a grand total of $23, that seemed pretty darn good to us, don’t you think?

We headed to Trader Joe’s because let’s face it, their prices can’t be beat, especially in the floral department. And they had a huge bin of unique pumpkins and gourds of all sizes for $6. Yes, you read that right…six buckaroos! We eyed this green one and knew she’d make the perfect vase or container for our arrangement.

Next, we went to the fresh flowers and decided to keep our colors pretty basic and neutral; creamy white roses, eucalyptus and some green berries. Plus, we had been eyeing some weeds growing along the roadside and went on a little excursion with our scissors to cut some of those wild grasses and weeds to add into our arrangement as filler. And bonus, they are completely free and pretty, too!

We traced a small circle on the top of your pumpkin and carefully carved it out along with all the seeds and membranes. On a side note, we aren’t sure what variety of pumpkin we had, but it smelled exactly like cantaloupe!

After we had our cleaned out pumpkin, we filled the opening with floral oasis and saturated it with fresh water.

We laid out all of our flowers and weeds on the workspace in front of us and began arranging them in our pumpkin. We didn’t really have a plan and we certainly don’t have training in floral design, but we made sure there was height, and dimension, no bare spots and a little whimsy with the addition of a few small branches. And who says you have to be a professional floral designer? If you love it and it feels right to you, that’s all that matters. Oh, and the fact that you probably saved yourself at least $80, well that my friend, is the icing on the cake…or…pumpkin!
